wiki.jpgHands down, Wikipedia is one of the best online resources for just about anything you need to research. You name it- World War II, Enron, nuclear chemistry -Wikipeida’s got info on it. As I was scouring Wikipeida today for info on the PageRank algorithm, I discovered something interesting in the “See Also,” or internal links section. It was a link to a Wikipedia page dedicated to PR 0.

Why A PR 0 Page?

The first question that came to my head was why a PR 0 page? What in the world would drive someone to create a Wikipedia page on the least prestigious ranking in the PR system. It would seem more appropriate to create a page about a PR 10, a ranking that is terribly difficult to acheive. Now that I think about, there are a bunch of loons online that would be more than willing to create an absolutely worthless Wikipedia page.

What’s So Funny About That?

If the mere existence of a Wikipedia article on a PR of 0 didn’t get you to chuckle a bit, this surely will. Below I have some excerpts from the PR0 article which are timeless, to say the least.

“PR0 indicates a PageRank of zero (out of a maximum of ten) on the Google search engine. This is something to be avoided in gaining a good Google ranking.”

I was about to choke from laughter as I read this. There is NO way to avoid a PR of 0 when starting out. You must build-up your PR from 0. Period. I don’t care who you are, there is no way to evade getting a PR 0 on your way to gaining a higher ranking.

The Non-Sense Continues

If that somehow didn’t get your laughter going, this probably will…

“Some webmasters will intentionally strive to keep some of their pages at PR0 so that they never get indexed…”

What kind of idiot would strive to keep pages on their site at a PR0 to keep Google from indexing them? Google could care less what PR your site’s pages have, if they crawl them and find some unique content, chances are good that they will index them. Not only is there an issue of Google indexing them irregardless of PR, but there is no sure-fire way to keep a page on your site from obtaining a higher PR. How are you to control people’s urges to link to a page? It might sound easy at first, but it’s anything but that.

What’s To Learn From This

If there’s anything to learn from this, it’s that any piece of information you might find on Wikipeida, or anywhere else for that matter might not be accurate. This is why it is best to research things at least several times and compare your findings. Further, if you find any information (especially about making money online) which you know is inaccurate, bring it to the attention of the author. If you’re on Wikipedia, fix the error yourself. The last thing you want to happen is have an aspiring money maker make a fool of themselves on a forum asking how to avoid getting a PR 0. Be courteous, save them the flaming and embarassment.
