Staring A Forum And Expecting A Fortune

October 6th, 2007 Posted in Uncategorized

What’s that one thing standing between you and the pot of gold the internet has to offer? Traffic. Without traffic, any site is as good as forum.jpgworthless. How do we get traffic? From good content and the subsequent backlinks that come with it.  If you’ve ever considered starting a forum so users could develop content for you, I won’t be the first to tell you that’s a stupid idea.

Forum Traffic Is Not Ideal for Monetization

If you’ve ever run a forum before, you know that your visitors consist of the same people everyday. This is bad news for most of your monetization efforts. While you may make a buck or two the first few days with some advertising program, that amount will eventually dwindle to zero. Why does this happen? Well, your visitors become accustomed to your forum and subsequently your ad locations. Once they get to know your site, they’ll stop clicking on the ads. CPM advertising is certainly an option, but that’s a whole other story.

Forums Require Maintenance

A forum is not a “set it and forget it” type thing. A forum requires an appropriate amount of monitoring and maintenance work. You have to ask yourself whether a few bucks a day (if you’re one of the lucky ones) is really worth constantly having to delete spammy posts and spam accounts. If you have an ounce of common sense, I’m sure you’d venture to say no.

In Closing

Those who want to start a forum should look elsewhere for making money online. Starting and running a forum can be a hassle, and the returns make it nowhere near worth it. Listen to me, start a blog and write your head off. Your time is much better spent doing this than playing janitor on a forum.
