Writing Content Unfit For Your Target Demographic
October 2nd, 2007 Posted in Uncategorized
Let me ask you a simple question. What do people do on your blog besides admire your layout? If you answered read your content, chances are that this post will be of interest to you.
Knowing Your Target Demographic
For your blog to succeed, it is crucial that you know who your target demographic is. What does that mean? In lehman’s terms, it basically translates to knowing WHAT type of visitors would be attracted to your site. Let’s use a gossip blog as an example. What type of audience would be attracted to a site full of gossip? An audience full of teens, of course. Once you KNOW who your target demographic is, you need to write content according to its needs.
Catering to a Target Demographic
Let’s continue using the example of a gossip blog. Since we know that most of our readership will consist of teens, we need to create content that is within their reading abilities. That mean’s limiting the complexity of the words we use and the writing style we employ. In contrast, if we were to start a blog about differential calculus, we would harness a much more elevated vocabulary and more complex writing style.
For Those Uncertain Of Their Target Demographic
If you are uncertain about who exactly your target demographic is, it is best to approach writing content carefully. Try to refrain from writing content that is heavy in complexity, or too simplistic. Find something inbetween that your readers respond well to.
Consequences of Ignoring Your Target Demographic
The consequences of ignoring your target demographic can be quite severe. If readers find that your content is much too elementary, chances are they won’t be visiting your blog much longer. The same goes for those teaching finger painting using MIT grad vocabulary. Use caution when developing content for your blog(s) as reckless behavior could prove to be less than spectacular.
