Duplicate Content
September 27th, 2007 Posted in Uncategorized
I know, at times writing a blog post is anything but fun. You have to come up with an idea, write up a rough draft and then perfect it. This seems especially counter-productive when you’re still not even making a penny from your blog. Believe me, writing unique content WILL pay off in the long run.
What is Duplicate Content?
Duplicate content is exactly what it sounds like, content that can be found elsewhere on the internet. I don’t mean a word or a short phrase, but a large chunk of content that can be found exactly as it is elsewhere. For example, take a look at the snippet of content below:
John Chow, a damn fine person, friend of the community, Ultimate Fighting Championship contestant, member of the Save the Whales Foundation, the man….
This little excerpt happens to be from John Chow’s blog. If it were to appear here, it would be considered duplicate content.
How Does Duplicate Content Pertain to My Blog?
As I mentioned earlier in this post, some people don’t like writing content. So what do they do? They head over to some free articles sites (such as Ezine Articles, Go Articles, etc.) and copy and paste articles to their blog. This is a bad idea. As you may recall, copying and pasting content from OTHER sites and posting it on yours means duplicate content on your site.
Why Duplicate Content is BAD News.
Google loves content. That might explain why everyone is in such a frenzy to get quality content on their site. Unfortunately, there is one form of content that Google frowns upon, duplicate content. When Google indexes your site and finds that you have duplicate content everywhere, they’ll throw your site into the “Supplemental Results” page. That crudely translates to no traffic from Google. No traffic = no money.
How to Avoid Duplicate Content Penalties
The simplest way to avoid duplicate content penalties is to write your own articles. If you don’t want to do it, find a freelancer who will do it for you. If you’re willing to spare 20 minutes, go to some free articles sites and read a few articles that are related to your niche. Then, create your own articles based on some of the things you read. Refrain from copying anything word-for-word.
In Conclusion
While developing unique content can be both tedious and time-consuming, it will provide the greatest returns in the end. Work your butt off NOW for a better future. Once you hit it big, content will be the least of your concerns.
