Making Yourself Look Incompetent

September 25th, 2007 Posted in Uncategorized

As a blogger, you owe it to yourself, and especially your readers, to look like an expert in your field. A large number (if not all) of your blog posts should reflect a high level of competency. Despite the repercussions of blogging about something you have no clue about, some bloggers venture into territory that they are absolutely unfamiliar with. This, they soon find, is the source of their catastrophic failure.

How To Know If You Are Competent Enough To Blog On A Topic

The first step in determining whether you are equipped to blog about a certain topic is reviewing your background with that topic. For example, pretend you were to start a blog about chemistry. You would have to think back to your school days and recall what you learned. Then, you would have to ask yourself whether you could maybe spit out 2-3 ~400 word posts a day on the topic. Many bloggers are simply unable to do this. If that is the case, you need to find another topic to blog about.

Keeping Your Credibility from Slipping Up

Once you setup a blog in a niche you are knowledgeable in, you have to strive to maintain your credibility. How do you do this? By avoiding posting about something that you’re completely clueless about. Let’s say that one day Joe decided to post about organic chemistry on his chemistry blog (Joe has no idea what organic chemistry is). This kind of mistake can cost big-time.

What A Display of Incompetence Can Do To You

If your readers begin to dismiss you as incompetent, one of several things can happen:

  • Loss of RSS subscribers
  • General loss of traffic
  • Tarnished reputation
  • Drop in online income

If you really want to avoid this mess, blog about something you are knowledgeable and passionate about. This in the end will yield you the greatest of benefits.
