Starting a Blog in a Saturated Niche

September 20th, 2007 Posted in Uncategorized

As I’ve said time and time again, it is paramount that you blog about something you’re passionate about. As true as this statement is, there are some obstacles facing you even if you do decide to blog about something you’re passionate about. saturated.jpgThe main obstacle that most should be concerned with is the amount of blogs already situated in the niche that you plan to attack. If you engage in some detective work, there is no reason why you should have to face this obstacle.

Before you go scouring the internet for blogs in the niche you plan to attack, have a solid list of about 5 niches which you would be interested in blogging about. This way, if one of them is way too saturated, you can just move on down the list. No need to waste time thinking up other ones. Remember, with blogging time is of the essence.

Now that you have that list in hand, jump over to Technorati and do a search for one of the niches you plan to blog about. Visit as many of the blogs as you can, making sure to check every time that the blog is ENTIRELY centered around that niche. If it’s not, don’t view it as one of your competitors. Once you’re done at Technorati, head over to Ice Rocket, Google Blog Search, and any other blog search engine you are familiar with, and repeat the process.

Once you’re done visiting blogs centered around the niche you hope to blog about, it’s time you determine whether or not it is a good idea to purse the specific niche. This can prove to be quite tricky, but since we did a little research beforehand, it shouldn’t be very hard. Think back to your searches on the blog search engines. Did you query return at least 10 pages worth of solid blogs centered around your niche on each search engine? If you answered yes to this, that is a pretty good indicator that that niche is saturated. You know what comes next, back to the list.

If your research left you with results nowhere near mine (less than 10 result pages on each search engine), you might have found a killer niche for your blog. All that’s left to do is check whether the niche is profitable or not!
