Comment Spamming
September 10th, 2007 Posted in How NOT to Make Money OnlineLeaving comments on blogs can be a great way to drive traffic to your blog or even help your blog out in SERP rankings. But, as with anything else, people manage to do this like idiots. If you don’t know what I’m referring to, look below.

Leaving a comment similar to this one is plain stupid. Many bloggers will see this as spam and delete your comment. If your looking for a simple and quick way to tarnish your blog’s reputation, this is it. Otherwise, read on.
Value is key
When you leave a comment on someone’s blog, it needs to contain something of value. By value, I mean something that would interest both the blog’s owner and readers. The easiest way to achieve this is to give your opinion on part of a post. Skim through the post and find an interesting statement. Then respond to it. Let people know whether you agree or disagree with it and why.
Adding your link the right way
The manner in which you add your link to a comment can make or break the comment. If you don’t want you comment to be flagged as spam, don’t be blatant with posting your link. Most blogs allow you to add your url to a comment with an anchor text of your choice. The anchor text tends to be what you enter under the “Name” field. This is the best way to get a link from a comment.
It is important that you remember to choose your anchor text very wisely. Take a quick glance at the other comments and check to see what anchor text they’re using. If they all consist of other bloggers’ names, it might be best if you continue the trend. Otherwise, use a keyword that your blog could rank better for in the SERPS. If you’re looking for a smarter way to decide what anchor-text to use, keep reading….
Knowing your comment goals
As I’ve said earlier, you can either leave comments to drive traffic to your blog or help it rank better in the SERPS. It is very important to ask yourself which of the two you hope to achieve before leaving a comment. If your just planning to drive some traffic from a respective blog to yours, it’s a good idea to just stick with your name or your blog’s name as the anchor-text.
If you hope to get some SEO benefit from leaving a comment, use a keyword related to your blog as the anchor-text. Before you do this, remember to check that the blog does not attach the “no follow” attribute to links. You can do this by viewing the source of the blog. If the “no follow” attribute is present, stick to driving traffic with the comment. Otherwise, be greedy and reap the SEO benefit.
