Leaving Your Footprints Uncovered

footprints.jpgAs humans, we find it quite easy to become attached to things. Whether it be our favorite t-shirt or watch, it’s often hard to let go of things which we cherish. When you’re working online, it is crucial that you avoid getting attached to things. Want to know why? Read on.

Your Attachment Is Your Biggest Enemy

Many of us share a common weakness online – using the same username on each and every website we register with. We use it for our Adsense account, our Clickbank account, our NY Times account, and so forth. For the most part, we haven’t thought twice about using it over and over again. What’s the hurt in that, right? Wrong!

Trouble Is A Search String Away

Google and other search engines can index some of your account activity. Let’s take the social bookmarking site Delicious for example. Delicious allows you to bookmark certain sites which are of interest to you. Thus, many webmasters choose to bookmark their own sites to gain a backlink from Delicious. If a person on Google happens to enter the correct search string, consisting of your username (which they may have found on a forum) along with the name of a social-bookmarking site, they might discover all of your sites. This is not good news.

Avoiding Problems

A majority of the people who search and subsequently find your sites mean no harm. But then, there are those with bad intentions in mind. You must anticipate that everyone who is looking to find what websites you own means harm. As such, it is important that your register on various sites using different usernames. While it may be challenging to keep track of a list of usernames, it is definitely worth the peace of mind.
