Formatting Your Titles Incorrectly
November 26th, 2007 Posted in UncategorizedFor some reason, many site owners pay absolutely no attention to their site’s titles. If you’re one of these webmasters, let me assure you that you’re making a grave mistake. Your sites title’s have a HUGE bearing on your SEO efforts. Let them go to waste, and you’ll find yourself with very little organic traffic.
Site Titles Aren’t Meant to Look Pretty
Some webmasters feel the need to express their artistic abilities when they format their titles. I’ll say this once, and hopefully I won’t have to say it again. These (#%@#^) types of characters DO NOT belong in a site’s title. While they may not have a huge effect on your SERP rankings, they are very distracting to see on a SERP page. If you want visitors, I would suggest you refrain from heavy character usage. When formatting your titles, try to stick to some of the more accepted characters for websites, ie. - , | , and :: .
Your Site’s Name Means Jack Alongside A Keyword
If you currently format your titles by placing your site name followed by the name of the page, your are making a massive mistake. Search engines HATE it when you do this, and will drop your ranking in the SERPS without hesitation. You must ALWAYS include the title of a site’s page BEFORE any other text. The title of the page should almost always include one or two keywords you are attempting to target.
What’s One More Keyword
Some of us go overboard when optimizing our sites for search engines. While going overboard is sometimes acceptable, it should definitely be avoided in your SEO efforts. When you do something dumb like stuff a bunch of keywords into your titles, you will HURT your SERP rankings rather than help them. Remember, SEO is all about moderation. Don’t exaggerate and you’ll be fine.
